*Cuba’s foreign ministry has announced the suspension of regular flights between Cuba and Argentina after 39 years. It attributes the decision to the fact that in March 2024, Argentina’s state-run oil firm (YPF) had informed Cuba’s state airline Cubana de Aviación S.A. (Cubana) of its refusal to continue supplying fuel to its aircrafts, citing the application of US trade sanctions on Cuba. Last month Cubana announced it had cancelled two flights on 23 and 24 April, citing the refusal of aviation fuel supply companies in Argentina to provide service to the airline, saying that these had invoked the “provisions of the US blockade measures against Cuba”. Despite the long-standing sanctions, Cubana’s flights between Havana and Buenos Aires had run largely uninterrupted under Argentina’s previous leftist administration led by former president Alberto Fernández (2019-2023), who maintained close ties with Cuba. However his successor, the far-right Javier Milei, who took over the presidency on 10 December 2023, has sought increasingly to align himself with the US.
