DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina put on the back foot by Odebrecht case
The Dominican Republic (DR)’s President Danilo Medina is facing repeated protests calling for his government to bring to justice all those suspected of involvement in the corruption network employed by Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht to secure state contracts in exchange for bribes [RC-17-01]. The public pressure has intensified after new allegations emerged in the Brazilian media (see sidebar) that Odebrecht had provided financing for Medina’s 2012 election campaign. Medina – who has denied the claims – has responded by announcing that his government would get to the bottom of the case and not allow corruption to go unpunished.
