GUATEMALA: Morales faces indigenous unrest

In recent weeks President Jimmy Morales and his conservative Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) government have faced protests from the indigenous sector over multiple demands. Among other things these include: calls for President Morales to honour his campaign pledge and crack down on official corruption; reforms to the country’s 1985 constitution to acknowledge indigenous methods to impart justice alongside the existing judicial system; and a reduction in electricity prices. Morales has since offered one concession (in relation to electricity prices). However, there is little hope that the current administration, which took office in January 2016, will take the historic demands of the marginalised indigenous sector (which accounts for 44% of Guatemala’s population on official figures) any more seriously than previous governments.
