National gov’t forced to intervene in La Guajira

The serious political and economic crisis afflicting Colombia’s north-easternmost department of La Guajira has forced the national government led by President Juan Manuel Santos to intervene while the situation of its elected leaders is resolved by the courts. After the elected La Guajira governor, Wilmer David González Brito, was jailed pending trial over corruption charges, the Santos government opted to appoint an interim governor to administer the department and help solve the acute economic crisis afflicting La Guajira.
