Guatemala: Cicig denounces smear campaign
The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and US embassy in Guatemala were among the institutions to come out this month in firm support of the UN-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) and its Colombian director, Iván Velásquez. The show of backing follows complaints of a smear campaign against both Cicig and Velásquez in recent weeks. These have been linked to efforts to target the local justice system as part of the anti-corruption drive; this month saw the third arrest on corruption charges in less than a year of a supreme justice court (CSJ) magistrate.
