EL SALVADOR: Facing up to the Trump threat

US Democractic Congressman James McGovern said during a visit to El Salvador in late January that he would ask President Donald Trump to help support the creation of a commission to search for Salvadoreans who ‘disappeared’ during the country’s long-running civil war (1980-1992) in which the army was financed by the US. But expectations for Trump are very limited. Over 400 illegal immigrants from El Salvador were deported in the opening days of his presidency. There is also a major concern that the flow of remittances from Salvadorean expatriates living in the US back to their home country, a crucial source of foreign exchange to help plug the yawning trade deficit, could be disrupted.
