EL SALVADOR: Corruption takes its toll

The government led by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén has reacted to El Salvador’s precipitate fall down the annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) published by the Berlin-based NGO Transparency International (TI). El Salvador slumped by 23 places to finish in 95th place, tied with Argentina, which had climbed 12 places. Only Mexico fell further. El Salvador’s secretary for executive transparency, Marcos Rodríguez, called on “all sectors of the country” to deepen the fight against corruption, accepting that “we are all part of the problem”.
