Haiti finally has its 58th president

Jovenel Moïse took over the reins of the presidency this month. His assumption of office on 7 February, which signals an end to the interim government and 18 months of political crisis, follows his outright victory in the 20 November 2016 presidential election [RC-16-12] for Parti Haïtien Tèt Kale (PHTK), the party of his predecessor and mentor, former President Michel Martelly (2011-2016). Unlike Martelly, Moïse will benefit from the strong presence of the PHTK and its allies in both houses of congress. This should ensure he is able to govern more effectively, placing him in a stronger position to address the multiple challenges facing the country which has yet to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake and, more recently, the impact of Hurricane Matthew which struck in October last [RC-16-10]. However, the new president continues to face doubts regarding his declared commitment to transparency given money laundering allegations currently under investigation by a judge which implicate the first couple.
