Education key to infant health

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) last month released a report on health inequities in Latin America & the Caribbean. Produced in conjunction with the US’s Tulane University, the report found that, rather than divisions based on urban/rural factors, education, income, and ethnicity played a more significant role in health indicators like the prevalence of child and infant mortality, both for the Andean as well as the wider region. Presenting the report in Panama City, María Cristina Perceval, Unicef’s regional director for Latin America & the Caribbean, highlighted that these health inequalities stemmed from systematic, generation by generation inequality in wealth and education. Perceval underlined that it would require dedicated policies and robust action from governments to end this cycle.
