ECUADOR: Moreno hard pushed to avoid run-off

Lenín Moreno, the presidential candidate for the ruling Alianza País (AP), has been unable to pull decisively clear in opinion polls ahead of general elections on 19 February. President Rafael Correa delivered an impassioned defence of his government’s achievements on 15 January, which marked the tenth anniversary of his coming to power and launching his ‘Citizens’ Revolution’, with a special event in Guayaquil that doubled as a campaign rally for Moreno and the AP. But voters do not appear to have bought into Correa’s claims that the contracting economy would be in a worse state if any of his predecessors had been at the helm over the last few years, and that Moreno is the only candidate to ensure continuity. The most likely scenario is a second round on 2 April.
