Mexico: Interpreting El Chapo’s extradition

On 19 January, less than 24 hours before Donald Trump was inaugurated as the new President of the United States, Joaquín  “El Chapo” Loera Guzmán, one of Mexico’s top drug cartel leaders, was bundled onto a plane in Mexico and extradited to US jurisdiction in New York, where he faces a total of 17 charges, including responsibility for smuggling 200 metric tonnes of cocaine, along with heroin, methamphetamines, and marijuana into the country. Opinion is divided over what kind of message the timing of the extradition was intended to send.
