DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Getting to grips with Odebrecht corruption

Along with various Latin American and African countries, the Dominican Republic (DR) was one of the nations in which Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht paid millions of dollars in bribes to secure lucrative state construction contracts in recent years. In fact, the latest evidence obtained by prosecutors in Brazil and the US (where the suspected corruption is also under investigation) suggests that Odebrecht paid the third-largest amount in bribes outlaid by the firm in Latin America to Dominican government officials and representatives (after those in Brazil and Venezuela). Yet unlike in Brazil, the Dominican authorities have so far failed to identify and much less prosecute anyone implicated in the case. The lack of zeal in pursuing the case is again raising serious questions about the Dominican government’s commitment to combat corruption.
