El Salvador: Violence escalates as gangs fight on two fronts

Up to 10 October this year El Salvador’s forensic medicine institute (IML) had recorded 5,047 cases of homicide, 28% more than in the whole of 2014 ― a year that had recorded a 56.8% increase on 2013. Five days later the national police (PNC), which uses a different methodology, had counted 5,260 cases. The government insists that most of the victims are members of the street gangs known as maras, and attributes much of the carnage to their factional infighting and ‘purges’, but its own forces have also contributed with a sharp increase in armed confrontations with the gangs.
