Mexican police face trial for torture

Development: On 16 April three state police officers went on trial in the Mexican state of Baja California (BC) for torture.

Significance: This is the first trial for torture to take place in BC since this particular offence was added to the criminal code in 1991, and there have only been seven convictions for torture at a federal level. The NGO Amnesty International (AI) described the trial as “a landmark moment for justice” in the state, although it added that there was “still a long way to go”. The trial begins just as deputies from the Distrito Federal (DF) have concluded investigations into allegations of army involvement in the massacre of 22 alleged criminals in the municipality of Tlatlaya in the Estado de México in June 2014, releasing a report which was critical of all of the relevant authorities for failing to assist in shedding light on the case.
