In Brief – Bolivia

SECURITY | Military on strike. On 21 April the president of Bolivia’s national association of non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and sergeants of the armed forces (ASCINALSS), NCO Johnny Gil Leniz, announced an indefinite strike across the country. The move follows the previous day’s decision announced by Defence Minister Rubén Saavedra to fire four NCOs who had been calling for internal reform of the armed forces. As well as the strike, to which Gil said some 10,000 NCOs would adhere, the wives of NCOs have also gone on hunger strikes in the departments of La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz to protest the sackings. A lawyer for the dismissed NCOs, Juan Carlos Revollo, has also announced plans to present legal action against the sackings.
