Gender-based violence on the rise

There has been an alarming increase in extreme forms of violence and in violations of women’s human rights in Mexico and Central America in recent years. A major reason for this escalation is that governments in the region lack the capacity or the political will to guarantee women’s rights and safety even when they recognise this is a problem and thus the perpetrators act with a high level of impunity.
