A reality check for Capriles

The Venezuelan presidential election campaign kicked up a gear in mid June with the registration of candidates. Declaring himself fully fit and free of tumours a month after a further round of chemotherapy, President Hugo Chávez launched his bid for a third consecutive term. An entourage of thousands accompanied the incumbent to the national electoral council (CNE), where his five pledges under new candidate registration requirements were to maintain national independence; deepen socialism; make Venezuela an economic and social power; end imperialism; and work to save the planet. Current opinion polls point to this being an election-winning platform.
